What is Desairology-or better known as Funeral Cosmetology?
The term Desairology is one we rarely hear. Even in the funeral industry, where the term was coined, most funeral professionals have never heard the term.
While the idea of putting makeup on a dead body certainly won’t appeal to all people, cosmetologists in the profession describe it as rewarding and creative. Funeral cosmetology is much more than putting makeup on the deceased. It takes a special skill to make a body look as it did in life. After the family provides the funeral home with a picture of the deceased, the cosmetologist may be responsible for many tasks, including reconstruction of the deceased’s body using wax, cotton, clay, wire mesh or plaster.
A Funeral Cosmetologist’s responsibility also includes dressing the deceased, applying makeup, stitching parts of the face that may be disfigured and administering injections to parts of the face that look deflated. Sometimes the Desairologist performs the embalming when the Funeral Director is not available. Styling the hair and manicuring the nails are the last finishing touches the cosmetologist performs on the deceased, before family and friends view the body.
As you can see from the above a Funeral Cosmetologist is very important to the families and funeral homes alike. They are a key figure in serving the client during such a difficult time.
